Change Text Size A A A

So, what is the meaning of Domiciliary care? If you have long-term care needs, there is a very good chance you will need help with personal care and other household tasks.

This is known as domiciliary care or Dom Care or increasingly home care.

Domiciliary care is really important because it can mean the difference between someone being able to continue living in their own home and having to move into residential care.

The word “domiciliary” comes from the Latin “domus”, meaning “home”. Domiciliary care varies enormously depending on the requirements of the individual. Some clients may only need a few minutes’ care each day, while others may require round-the-clock 24-hour live-in care.

Dom care is not just for the elderly. It can be equally important to children, young people and people with a host of different care and support needs.

Dom care can involve help with such things as getting up in the morning and going to bed in the evening, dressing, preparing meals and drinks and maintaining basic standards of hygiene and cleanliness.

Good domiciliary care workers don’t just help with daily tasks such as the laundry, cooking, washing and dressing, they also provide emotional support to clients. Sometimes clients simply want someone to chat to.

While dom care usually means care provided in a person’s home, many Dom Care workers will also provide other practical support such as taking a client to a hospital appointment, or shopping or even attending a local social activity in their community.

Domiciliary care workers undergo a significant amount of training to ensure they have the necessary skills to deliver this kind of care to clients. Care has to be safe and effective and there is an increasing move towards the personalisation of care which means that the care delivered if appropriate to a particular person rather than prescriptive.

The overriding aim of domiciliary care is to help people remain as independent as possible for as long as possible and remain in their own homes.
